RETIRED RESCUES

These equines have been through enough. We have opted to keep them at the rescue until the end of their troubled lives. They are not discarded but loved and cared for...each at their own pace, given the space that they alone are allowed to choose.

CLASSY & MAJOR (Jan. 2023 - Abuse Rescue)

These Morgans have been together their whole lives. Their loving owner cared for them dearly until she got dementia, which resulted in neglect and abuse. They were taken by law enforcement to a rescue in western Montana, and we got them about a year later. They have settled in nicely at the rescue and are sanctuary horses due to their age and the big upheaval in their lives. Classy is doing really well for the age of 28! Major has Cushing along with other health issues; he is on hospice care and will be with us until he tells us it's time.

ADDENDUM: we assisted Major to a peaceful rest on March 1, 2024.

PENNY (Apr. 2023 - Owner Surrender)

This 11 year old mule has an extreme fear of people. She went through 3 homes in under 2 years; all 3 homes tried to work with her but no one could earn her trust. She is here for the remainder of her life to be worked with on her terms.

KATIE (May 2023 - Owner Surrender)

This 30 year old mule was very loved, but due to health problems her owners had to find a new home for her during her retirement years. Katie’s diet consists strictly of “mash” and occasional forage. She has bonded with Oakley

PATTY (Nov. 2022 - Auction)

This 21 year old mini-donkey came from the loose horse sale in November 2022. She had foundered and could barely walk. Patty was diagnosed with PPID, or Cushing’s Disease in December 2023. Patty is our only donkey, and is a great little mascot for the rescue.

OAKLEY (May 2023 - Neglect Case from Western Montana)

This mare was starved down and a caring neighbor contacted us. At her “dental checkup” we discovered that her teeth are pretty smooth so she is definitely 20+ years old. Oakley is missing her left eye. She gets chopped hay (run through a wood chipper), and “mash” twice daily (soaked grain that consists of alfalfa pellets, senior feed and a weight-gain oil supplement). Oakley insists on the perfect ratio of senior feed to alfalfa for her to finish. This girl knows what she wants! She has bonded with Katie the mule, so will remain at the sanctuary.

HOPE (June 2023 - Auction)

When found, she had a long-ago injured eye that was weeping, and her tongue was hanging out the side of her mouth. We were sure Hope would be a euthanasia case with neurological damage. We opted to have a vet review before moving forward with euthanasia, and three days later all tests revealed that Hope had no neurological damage. After her quarantine period, Hope had surgery to remove her blind eye. She is on "mash" twice daily for weight gain. She has bonded with Sarah's horse Char, so will remain at the sanctuary.
